This privacy policy explains how CompareMyVet ("we", "us", "our") collects and uses personal data when you visit comparemyvet.uk or use our services. We are committed to protecting your privacy and complying with UK data protection law, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

In plain English: We collect your email and postcode when you join our waitlist so we can tell you when CompareMyVet launches or expands in your area. We don't sell your data, we don't run advertising, and you can ask us to delete your information at any time.

1. Who we are

CompareMyVet is a UK vet comparison platform that helps pet owners compare veterinary practices by price, ownership, and services. You can contact us at our contact page or by email at hello@comparemyvet.uk.

For the purposes of UK GDPR, CompareMyVet is the data controller of the personal data we collect from you.

2. What information we collect

We collect the following categories of personal data:

To send you launch notifications — when you join our waitlist, we'll email you when we launch or expand in your area (legal basis: consent).
To respond to your enquiries — when you contact us via our contact form or email (legal basis: legitimate interest in responding to people who contact us).
To improve our service — anonymous website analytics help us understand how people use the site (legal basis: legitimate interest in improving our service).
To comply with legal obligations — where required by UK law.

We will never sell your personal data to third parties or use it for advertising purposes.

4. Who we share your data with

We share your personal data only with the third-party service providers we rely on to run CompareMyVet. These providers process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements:

Supabase — our database provider (stores waitlist emails and postcodes securely, EU-hosted)
Netlify — our web hosting provider for the application
Namecheap — our web hosting provider for the main website
Google Search Console — aggregated search data only, no personal information

We do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or any party outside of these essential service providers.

5. How long we keep your data

We keep your personal data only as long as we need it for the purposes described above:

Waitlist subscribers: Until you unsubscribe or request deletion, or for 3 years after we last contact you — whichever comes first.
Contact form submissions: Up to 12 months after the issue is resolved.
Practice registrations: For as long as your practice is listed, plus 12 months after removal.

6. Your rights under UK GDPR

You have the following rights regarding your personal data:

Right of access — ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you
Right to rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data
Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten") — ask us to delete your data
Right to restrict processing — ask us to temporarily stop processing your data

We use a minimal set of cookies to operate the website:

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not participate in cross-site tracking.

8. Data security

Encrypted data storage via Supabase (EU-hosted, ISO 27001 certified)
Access controls limiting who can view personal data internally
Regular security reviews of our infrastructure

No system is perfectly secure. If we become aware of a data breach affecting your personal data, we'll notify you and the ICO within 72 hours as required by law.

9. Children's privacy

CompareMyVet is not directed at children under 16. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children. If you're under 16, please don't use our waitlist or contact form without a parent or guardian.

10. International transfers

Your personal data is stored in the European Union. If we need to transfer data outside the EU/UK (for example, if a service provider is based in the US), we'll only do so with appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses, as required by UK GDPR.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent changes. Significant changes will be communicated via email to waitlist subscribers.
